Problem Solving at 100 Years Old
👋 Hello, I’m Kevin Ferguson, author of 🍷 Rain on the Monte Bello Ridge,🍷 a memoir about health, aging and winemaking. (Book summary) 🍇 This is my newsletter. It includes book research and early release chapters about winemaker Mario Gemello and his centenarian widow, Kay Gemello. 📖 They are my lovable maternal grandparents. Behind the Scenes of the book: Mario Gemello, my late grandfather, was the handyman of the family. As you’ll read below, Grandma Kay has her own way of doing things.
Problem Solving at 100 Years Old
Grandma Kay doesn’t spend much time in her living room. The most frequent activity she does in there is open the blinds in the morning, and close them when the sun goes down.
One recent day, in between those tasks, she got a Marie Kondo bug in her and decided to move a lamp from one corner of the room to the front corner, close to where she fiddled with the blinds.
However, that created a new problem. The lamp shade blocked a small painting.
When my mom visited recently, she noticed how awkward that looked. She suggested moving the painting up a bit.
Grandma Kay vetoed it. “I can’t. Every time I came in the room, the painting was tilted. I got tired of straightening it, so I glued it to the wall.”
